How the Universe Began and Why You Should Care

How Everything Started


Have you ever looked at the sky and wondered where everything came from? The stars, the planets, even us? Scientists believe it all began with something called the Big Bang.

The Big Bang means the universe started a long time ago about 13.8 billion years ago through an explosion. Everything was in one tiny, hot spot, and then it began to grow very fast.

The first clue is that the universe is still getting bigger. A man named Edwin Hubble found that galaxies are moving away from each other. The farther away they are, the faster they go. This shows that space is stretching, like blowing up a balloon (University of Western Australia, n.d.).

The second clue is a soft glow in space called cosmic microwave background radiation. Scientists found it in 1965. It’s heat left over from the Big Bang, and we can still see it today (BBC, n.d.).

The third clue is that we see a lot of light elements like hydrogen and helium in space. These elements were made just a few minutes after the Big Bang. Scientists predicted this, and what we see matches the prediction (University of Western Australia, n.d.).

So why does this matter? Because this is our story. Learning about the Big Bang helps us understand where we came from, where we are and maybe where we are going.
